Fire is one of the most significant risks that can affect any organisation. Not only does fire pose a risk to life, but can destroy buildings and property and can damage our cultural heritage.
The process of Fire Risk Assessment is used to determine what could cause a fire, what could burn in a fire, and how the fire can affect the people within and around the building. In doing so, it can also be used to help protect the organisation from loss of property or damage to buildings caused by fire, although it should be noted that this is not the primary purpose of the assessment.
The stages of fire risk assessment are:
- Identify the fire hazards
- Determine who is at risk from fire
- Consider the existing fire precautions and measures. Are these adequate?
- Evaluate the risk
- Form an action plan
- Record the significant findings
- Review and revise the assessment
Fire Risk Assessment shares many common themes with the kind of Risk Assessment method that is used in Health and Safety to consider 'ordinary' safety risk. However, there are some essential differences, which are outlined in this section.
